HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR PURPOSE?
BY: LISA MAKI
A woman gets married. Her whole life revolves around her husband. She makes him and her marriage her purpose. Years later her husband leaves her for another woman. She is devastated. She is lost! She doesn’t even know where to begin. She has lost her purpose. Has she?
A mother raised her daughter to be a successful doctor. She worked so hard to send her to school, even getting in deep debt over it. The daughter followed her mom’s wishes and became who she wanted her to be. Has she found her purpose?
Your marriage is not your purpose. Your career is not your purpose. Even ministry is not your purpose. These, and all other things you do and get involved in are avenues that God gives you to fulfill your purpose.
For believers of Jesus Christ, or those who call themselves Christians, our general purpose is the Great Commission, or what the Apostle Paul calls us the “ministry of reconciliation”. Everything we do should be geared towards this general purpose. Our specific purpose is based on our gifts, experiences, abilities, personalities, and whatever our unique individualities are. This is our own way of fulfilling the general purpose. This is where our respective calling revolves.
The hobbies, education, career, ministry, and even spouse we choose are indicators of this specific purpose, unless it was imposed on you. For the most part, we choose what we are interested in. And our interests are based on who we are and how we are made to be.
All the things that we get ourselves into are opportunities for us to fulfill our specific purpose, which is tied up to the general purpose that Jesus gave to His disciples. In short, your career, marriage, ministry, and education are merely platforms and avenues to fulfill your calling.
The question is: How do you discover your purpose?
This is not a one-shot deal that can happen overnight. It is a process of learning from each experience, and healing from the hurts you’ve been through.
Discovering your purpose is a matter of connecting your past and present, so you can proceed more successfully to the future. It is like solving a jigsaw puzzle, and using each piece to create the whole.
Once you have discovered your purpose, you will have a blueprint to follow. This blueprint actually came with you when you were born. However, it came with an invisible ink, which becomes more and more visible as you come closer to it.
