SOUL MATES - SOLE MATES
January 2012
This is an article that I am co-writing with my husband. His’ is the first part and mine is the second part. This article is to show our readers the different points of view of men and women when it comes to soul mates. It is also meant to show our readers how both of us have experienced being soul mates/sole mates through Jesus Christ.
Naturally, we all want the same things, one of which is to be "happy ". We all dreamed of "big things" when we were young. I myself was a man who thought it worthy to daydream about the "right" partner … a sidekick. Then throw in some romance; a life like the movies but better. Would I go as far as to call it "soul mates"? Naw! Too corny. But was it ok for the "right" girl to describe her "prince" as one? Um, sure! Cuz the right one for us can say anything cheesy they want, cuz the right one goes above and beyond "us" as individuals. The right person for us, we allow to get away with it all. The right one knows how to keep us aflame for them, or maybe it's just cause and effect, or maybe the everlasting vibe we feel for one another is divine.
I will go with divine. I don’t believe there are any soul mates for those who would never accept such a thing. As a man thinketh, so he is (Proverbs 23:7). If he believes he is a loser, then he reduces himself to such. I always knew there was something better ahead. Call me an optimist, or chosen, but I always saw the longsuffering eventually patterning into a love story that only gets better and better forever.
Soul mates for me, is a word that is kind of negatively used with a hint of sarcasm. Nowadays people even speak demise over their marriages kind of jokingly cliché.
I think growing up I thought everyone always thinks the same, but now I think that God was just fashioning me to uphold a certain virtue about life. We were all given the gift and with that came the tools to maintain it, to tend it, but many chose to get defeated early on and then escape through games and habits that only tear away at that gift, that chipped away until there was nothing left. While God intended for us as a people to evolve into maturity, many settle for crumbs and embrace denial much before faith. This "lack" of faith thereof sets in motion a crumbling fate. God wants to blow our mind with blessings, you see this when you see the drastic change in those who draw nigh, but yet many still choose to drag behind the move of God. It is a spiritual malady that keeps people from experiencing all that God could have for them.
Putting together the right couple couldn't possibly be a hasty trick on the Father's part. I am positive He would have to take His time. First He needs to KNOW you. Since you have free will, you can keep yourself from Him. I am basically saying, with God every imaginable thing is possible, even that infamous "soul mates", because God is supernatural. HE hears your thoughts from afar, and knows the desires of your heart. You can ask for anything, but don't ask amiss! The motivation must be correct as to why you would need a soul mate! If the reason is to glorify Him, well then my guess is that your prayer is catapulted to the top of the list. Soul mates are surely rare, they are dreamed aloud by young girls like a fairy tale, but in actuality are as real as JESUS CHRIST. The wife’s faith and my own have made us whole in divine, prophetic union, one with the Father whom IS love.

Just like almost every girl, I have always dreamed of my prince charming who will rescue me one day and take me with him…happily ever after. My concept of a prince charming was not only a handsome and gorgeous man but someone who is my soul mate.
I remember being on the lookout for that soul mate. My basis was that instant connection of the heart and mind, followed by that tingling feeling all over my body. I guess I based this concept from all those novels I’ve read and love stories I’ve watched. It was very frustrating. I met men who connected with me mentally but I just didn’t get that tingly feeling. Then I met those who gave me that tingly feeling but there was no other connection. After some time, I totally gave up on this soul mate issue and just settled for anyone who will love me, even more than I will love him. I just needed to be loved.
I found that man who loved me more than I loved him and it wasn’t enough for me. There was something inside of me that still believed that my prince charming was out there … my perfect match … the one who was created perfectly for me. Was I just dreaming? Yes I was, at that time, because I didn’t know the reality of Jesus.
When I finally surrendered my life to Jesus, I discovered what true love was all about. I began experiencing love for what it really was … the pure love of God. My “soulish” realm (mind and emotions) was renewed and I became more and more connected with Jesus. It was this intimate connection with Him that led me to the man who He has set aside for me.
So did I meet my soul mate? Yes I did, but only because my soul was surrendered to Jesus just as his soul was. This gives me a fresh new definition of a soul mate. While I previously thought of soul mate as that instant connection of the heart and mind and then that tingling sensation in the body, I now look at it as that instant connection of your spirits. When a man and woman are totally surrendered to Jesus, they will know when they see each other. Their spirits will speak and connect with each other like magnets. So where does the “soul” fit in here?
In Romans 8:6 Paul talks about the “mind of the flesh” and “mind of the spirit”. The mind belongs to the “soulish” realm. This means that we can think and feel in the flesh, even if we are in the Lord. This may even deceive us, thinking that since our minds and hearts were instantly connected with a fellow Christian, then he is from the Lord. This is why I believe that there has to be a connection of the spirits first. When the connection starts here, then it is the mind and heart of the spirit that will be activated. This for me is what a soul mate is. And this for me should be the foundation of every Christian marriage. Now if you are married and you don’t feel this connection with your spouse, I advise you to pray. God can restore your marriage to how it should have been in the first place.
I also believe that there is only one soul mate for each one. This means that your “soul mate” is your “sole mate”. God created you for just that one person, and that person was created just for you.
