THAT EVIL SPIRIT NAMED "CONTROL"
DECEMBER 2012
by Lisa Maki
One of the biggest problems we are dealing with in the body of Christ is the issue of control. I am not talking about the very obvious control issues such as someone trying to lord it over you. I am talking about very subtle moves that you can hardly even smell up close. You only realize what it is once it has coiled around you and taken over you.
The truth of the matter is: this spirit can also jump on any of us, without us even being aware of it. It is so evil and its main objective is to take over what God is trying to fulfill in our lives.
Let me describe this spirit to you by showing you its characteristics. It appears in various forms, but with the same proven agenda.
Characteristic 1: DO WHAT I DO
This spirit is no respecter of the gifts and calling that God has given you. It doesn’t care about where God has placed you for the season. All it thinks about is its agenda. It wants you to do what it is doing, to distract you from what God has called you to do. It is insensitive and does not have any inclination to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
People who have this spirit on them expect you to do what they do without careful consideration of where God has placed you. They compare you to themselves and judge you for not keeping up with what they are doing and where they are. Beware of this spirit!
Characteristic 2: DO IT NOW!
This spirit is very impatient and hasty. It wants things NOW! It doesn’t want to wait. You know why? Because it needs an instant gratification of what it wants, and that is to control you. It will not give you the chance to decide prayerfully and hear from God.
People who have this spirit are always in a rush to do things and will pressure you to do the same. They are busy bodies who don’t have time to spend alone with God, in meditation of His Word and His further leading. They are very restless. Be cautious of this spirit!
Characteristic 3: YOU’RE NOT DOING MUCH
This spirit will put a guilt trip on you that you are not doing much. It will make you feel guilty for resting or for doing less than what it expects of you. It will torment you with the thought that you are lagging behind or are slacking. It will confuse you as to where God really wants you to be.
Christians who have been burnt-out with their busy schedules and are called by God to rest in Him are those who are most often attacked by this kind of spirit. Its main objective is to make you move when God is telling you to rest. It wants you to get out of order with God, causing you to disobey. It wants to delay your journey, if not stop it.
People who have this spirit will always put pressure on you to do more. They will not listen to you when you tell them that God wants you to rest. In fact, they will challenge you and tell you, “You can’t isolate yourself from people”, or put the Great Commission right before your face. If you are not careful you can easily fall into this trap only to realize that you are moving ahead of God. Guard yourself from this spirit!
Characteristic 4: SUPPORT ME!
This spirit is so self-centered and self-focused that all it wants is for you to pay attention to it. It will pressure you to support it and will make you feel bad if you don’t. It will blame you for not supporting God’s move. This spirit does not have any intentions of building relationships. All it wants is your support.
I have seen this spirit jump on so many Christians here on facebook. They send you messages to support them without even building any relationship with you. They tell you to “like” their music or whatever they are promoting. I am warning you of this spirit, not only from other people but from you as well. Examine yourself and be sure that you don’t have this spirit on you; otherwise you better cast it out in the name of Jesus.
Characteristic 5: LIVE BY MY RULES
This spirit has its own rules and will make you bow down to these rules. It will appear to be so professional and will make you think that it is some code of ethics that you have to live by. This spirit is so possessive of its own self-made ideas and will claim full authority over them. It will invite you to be a part of their movement only to make you a slave to what they believe in.
People who have this spirit exude an air of authority that almost hypnotizes others. They are very influential and can sway you with intelligent words. After they get you they will be very watchful of you, making sure you live exactly by the rules. Be very cautious of this spirit.
All these characteristics are of the same evil spirit ... the SPIRIT OF CONTROL. It is the spirit that is plaguing the “body” and as I’ve said earlier, appears in a very subtle way. It can jump on anyone, regardless of position and intention. It is the same spirit that tricked Eve in the garden, the same spirit that jumped on Abraham when he listened to his wife Sarah to get Hagar pregnant, the same spirit on Moses when he hit the rock twice, the same spirit on David when he counted his soldiers, the same spirit on Peter when Jesus rebuked him, and the same spirit that wants to take over God’s people now.
Don’t ever let this spirit go near you. And when it does, stand your ground and flee from it.
